We ask...
When we are awarded with new online spaces, what is to be said about the physical? How can art bridge connections between us while we are distanced? And, in what ways does the local shift, grow and change when our public goes virtual? With these admittedly complex questions in mind, the exhibition before you takes on a simple task; to propose hope in a world of the unknown. In an unexpected linkage of over 60 artwork donations by student, professional, local, and international artists, Cézanne’s Closet 2021 is the 27th rendition of the Union Gallery’s largest annual fundraiser. This exhibition offers a moment of artistic diversity, designating a new value to our previous notions of community, permitting a certain clarity in our world.

Through the talent and generosity of the artists, this exhibition includes works ranging from natural landscapes and wildlife, to the abstract, created with paint, print, collage, sculpture, and an eclectic range of mediums. We stand for “art for art’s sake,” and we present a roster of unique artists whose individual efforts have created a chance for collectivity and communal support. This year’s Cézanne’s Closet aims to highlight how art endures through the toughest of times, and contributes to supporting and expanding communities.
