Program Assistant (Communications and Programme Support)

Job Description

The Program Assistant aids staff members with administrative and organizational tasks. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, highly organized and able to recognize tasks at hand and work fluidly through a variety of responsibilities. The Program Assistant will work with the Director on many aspects of the galleries operations but will also be required to work independently on tasks including communications, website maintenance, design, event coordination, exhibitions, publications and special projects.

Qualifications

Knowledge and interest in contemporary art and its various practices, relevant post secondary Degree/Diploma in a related discipline and three years experience working in a gallery or arts institution (or equivalent in work/professional experience) 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills andextremely organized and detail oriented

Extremely strong computer skills are essential with PC and MAC platforms, Office Suite programs, InDesign, Photoshop and web site (Dreamweaver) software

Knowledge of video editing an assetExperience using digital photography equipment

Ability to multi-task and work independently Personality suitable for working with the public, students and volunteers

Areas of Responsibility (Communications and Programme Support)

manage gallery communications; maintain databases and information technology, coordinate, input and mail information on gallery programs to advertisers, media, social media, members, gallery supporters etc.

design and layout of gallery press material, pamphlets, newsletter, and other publications and promotional materials as assigned

maintain the gallery website

assist with coordination and installation of exhibitions; prepares exhibition interpretive materials, invitations, help with hanging and lighting of exhibits, document exhibitions and events

monitor condition of gallery walls, floors, and orders supplies, maintain the gallery resource area

respond to visitor requests, coordinate and staff rental events and opening receptions

clerical tasks and support for fundraising activities as required

coordinate volunteer activities and manages membership (communications, renewals and record keeping)

For 2013 2014 this is a one year very part-time position, 10-12/week, $16/hr. with the possibility of an increase in hours for the subsequent two years.  Applicant must be available to work Saturdays and occasional evening events.  Please email resume with references, a sample of design work and a short writing sample to: Jocelyn Purdie, Director, Union Gallery at jp14@queensu.ca by June 10th, 2013.

Start date: two weeks training mid-July to start mid-September 2013 (the gallery closes from August 3 until mid-September 2013), 3 year term.

 

Note : New gallery hours:
May 1 - August 3, 2013
Wednesday - Saturday: 12-4:30pm

September 2013 - April 2014
Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 11-4:30pm

The gallery will be closed August 4 - September 12, 2013
