A Tapestry of Birth (detail), embroidery on fabric, 2009-2011
Rebecca Soudant’s stunning 35 foot tapestry is a richly textured and whimsical account of her pregnancy with her first child. Hand embroidered so that every inch of fabric is covered in thread, Soudant weaves together a narrative of the anxieties and joys of impending parenthood through depictions of local landmarks, social history and cultural expectations.
Rebecca Soudant lives in Kingston and is involved in the arts community. She is also a Visual Arts high school teacher at Smiths Falls Collegiate and has been teaching there for thirteen years. She has exhibited work in Kingston, Toronto, Montreal, British Columbia and Spain. She is currently working on a small community newsletter called the Maitland using a small letter press in her basement.
