Nabokov’s succinct statement “My very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when I was three […]” (Lolita, 10) is the impulse for the mixed-media installation Picnic, Lightning. The installation is comprised of several pieces that comment upon personal identity construction, self-projection and the location of media and the arts in these processes. This exploration into the personal and the shared, the viewed and the act of viewing, creates a space that is dominated by the visual as much as it is by the absent identity of the artist.
Rachel Jekanowski is in her fourth year of Film & Media Studies at Queen’s University.
