Union Gallery and Juvenis Festival Storefront Art Gallery
April 29 - May 7, 2017 | Constructed Landscapes | Curated by Christopher Grant
The Juvenis Festival in partnership with the Union Gallery is pleased to present a juried group exhibition of artists with ties to the Kingston Area between the ages of 13-30. Constructed Landscapes will run for the duration of the Juvenis Festival, April 29th – May 7th.
The Juvenis Festival is Kingston's youth arts festival running April 29 to May 7 as part of National Youth Week. Founded in 2016 and produced by Blue Canoe Productions, this festival showcases the talent of youth between the ages of 13-30 in various art forms such as concerts, theatre shows, dance shows, film projects, visual arts, and so much more! Juvenis offers free workshops throughout the week for young artists and live performances for the entire community.
Featuring the work of twelve artists, Constructed Landscapes explores the relationship between human-made landscapes and the natural world. Reflecting on this theme, the selected art works explore individual relationships to cities, towns, and communities, as well as the theoretical framework that defines the socially constructed identity of nature within these environments.
Constructed Landscapes is the culmination of a mentorship program through the Union Gallery in partnership with the Juvenis Festival. This project-based mentorship program of the Union Gallery is designed to provide professional development for an emerging curator through a working relationship with an experienced practicing curator or artist. The program supports the development of creative and professional skills, decision-making strategies and resourcefulness and an opportunity to more actively engage with the visual arts community in Kingston. Emerging curator Christopher Grant worked with Teresa Carlesimo, a professional artist and curatorial assistant at the Union Gallery, to present this exhibition for the festival.
Please join us on April 29th at 12:30pm for the Juvenis Festival opening reception held at the Storefront Gallery located at 247 Princess Street, Kingston, ON. The Storefront Gallery will be open from 12-5pm Saturday, April 29 through Saturday, May 6 and from 10am-12pm on Sunday, May 7.
