The family archive is a rich and expansive collection of historical artifacts that have had a noteworthy impact on the family development. Curators Shalmon and Visser have arduously searched the archives to find objects of significance. Memories attached to the items are told through the object history: where they came from and the vital statistics. The memories of the family are told through these objects, recalling everything from a day with friends to the death of a family member. The items create a narrative of meaningful events.

Curatorial statement
We approached this project with various ideas and goals in mind – we wanted to somehow incorporate the various residents of Kingston (both students and permanent residents) and encourage their participation through lending us an object that meant something important to them. We were pleasantly surprised at the willingness and enthusiasm that this project was met with, and have received objects ranging from childhood blankies to tin cans.

Our goal was to encourage involvement from members of the non-art community, those who were not as comfortable in a gallery setting as artists, to be a part of an exhibition. We also wanted to give equal opportunity to University students and residents who are not affiliated with the university. In doing so, we are creating linkages between art, the university, and the Kingston community.
