Auriane Sokoloski
Curatorial statement
The institution of marriage is currently under siege. Increasingly the validity and necessity of this tradition is called into question. Examining marriage on a local, national and global level, artist Auriane Sokoloski seeks to reveal the construct of this custom in addition to the changes it has undergone. Additionally, she points to inconstancies between our contemporary reality and the images we uphold in relation to love, marriage, and traditional women’s roles in Western society.
Sokoloski is an interdisciplinary artist who explores socio-political phenomena through photography, performance and installation. This exhibition is comprised of three series of photographs titled Made in Taiwan, The Female Gothic, and Twin Brides. Additionally, Sokoloski has created a site-specific installation and performance to speak to the issues addressed in these series.
This project is an exciting opportunity to bring Sokoloski’s conceptual work to Kingston where it can impact multiple audiences. Made in Taiwan will provide a space for the discussion and questioning of several topics – from marriage to the impact of globalization.
