Simpatico is an opportunity to explore the convergence of two artists and their work over the past four years. The word “simpatico” is of Italian origin and is defined by the phrase “of like mind”. Simpatico expresses the artistic connection and the mutual understanding experienced by the artists as a result of their interaction. Quite simply understood as a successful communication – a profound meeting of minds – the show title reinforces the context in which the art was created. The show presents themes that are intimately related though visually resolved from two unique perspectives. In this creative process, the two artists have taken inspiration and encouragement from each other on their journey together. This exhibition explores the human figure and its connection to social, psychological and spiritual issues that exist outside the constraints of traditional painting.

In our increasingly globalized world, the human body is a common denominator – through its potential and vulnerability we are united as world citizens. Its depiction speaks a universal language that expresses our collective capacity for survival, progress and self-actualization. An eclectic mix of disciplines informs my work. My studies of social psychology and the psychology of perception have been two key influences. Social connectedness and non-verbal communication are themes that I’m currently exploring in my work. In addition to our connection on a physical level, my exploration of social connectedness and interest in Yogic philosophy are also prompting me to look more closely at the intuitive and spiritual boundaries of human connection. I’m interested in investigating communication that transcends time and space. My current body of work is probing the relationship between body and mind and the pivotal role that relationship plays both in the search for self-understanding and in establishing the connection of self to the greater human community.

Art is rooted in connectedness to others; our human ties provide an experience, memory or expression of this and the body is the common vehicle. My work engages with the figure, dealing with both its earthly and spiritual communicative capacities. My current research is focused on the psychological theories of C.G. Jung and their inherent connection to spirituality, alchemy and the creative process. Jungian theory draws upon broader themes of religion and comparative mythology, while phenomenology deals with the issue of subjective experience. The visual aim or materialization of these thematic concerns is the creation of large-scale figurative paintings, worked on a sculpted surface texture. My underlying purpose is to explore the registration of the figure, with an emphasis on the creation of the mark itself, an approach that attributes equal value to the abstract and the representational – both as derivatives of form. The application of the materials is of particular concern to me, focusing on gesture and working horizontally in order to create the sense of topography characteristic of performative painting.
