A Sense of Place
Roslyn Peter, Kelsey McIntyre, Veronica Monture
October 10 - 31, 2006
Reception: October 10 - 31, 6-8p

This exhibition explores the significance of place through oil painting. All three artists bring a deep level of commitment, contemplation and sensitivity to their explorations of settings. Their images range from contemporary urban cityscapes to the timelessness of uninhabited nature. Each artist strives to connect the viewer with a sentimental association to a specific place, with the hope that the viewer will be able to make broader associations.

Roslyn Peter, Sleeping Waters, mixed media, 2006

Roslyn Peter
Roslyn Peter develops her own style of painting the Canadian landscape from experiences of travelling through northern Canada. It is in this inspiration that the most mundane aspect of a simple landscape changes to be the launching point for vibrant and poetic paintings, using colour, layering and texture. Peter’s work invites the viewer into the landscape and allows them to recall their own relationships with the land.

Currently living in Kingston, Roslyn Peter is a fourth year student at Queen’s University taking her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her focus of study in her final year is oil painting and she intendeds to develop works surrounding the theme of Canadian landscape and identity. Growing up Roslyn was always fascinated by nature and her passion for the outdoors has been translated into her artwork.

Kelsey McIntyre
Kelsey McIntyre, Tea Lounge on Princess, oil on canvas, 2006

Kelsey McIntyre

McIntyre’s work expresses scenes of contemporary life, informed by photographs and observations of local settings, which aspire to connect the viewer to a specific time and place. The spaces and atmospheres have personal meaning to McIntyre but are social spaces that viewers may draw their own connections to. McIntyre plays on her surroundings by painting using light that dually transforms reality and evokes emotion.

Kelsey McIntyre was born and raised in Ottawa. She is currently a student in her fourth year of her BFA at Queen’s University in Kingston, with her primary focus being oil painting. After graduation Kelsey plans to pursue travelling and Graduate School.

Veronica Monture
Veronica Monture, Highway Series: To Kingston, to London, to Kingston, to London, oil on canvas, 2006

Veronica Monture
Monture aims to capture the everyday moments that are most often taken for granted; common views, yet not always acknowledged at a certain time, place, and position. Monture bases her work on her own photographs and experiences, which translates into paintings with personal meaning that may also trigger memories of distance and destination within the viewer.

Among Veronica Monture’s immense range of interests such as architecture, rowing, and travel, drawing and painting her experiences and perceptions of her everyday surroundings has been one of her main passions. Veronica is now in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours degree at Queen’s University. Veronica was born and raised in London, Ontario.
